Day 2
The Texas Panhandle 06/26/2022
Day 2 found us on the road again. Our destination today is Lubbock, Tx. Lubbock is located in the heart of Comancheria. This land was the domain of the Comanche. This region is known as the Llano Estacado, the southern end of the High Plains. Lubbock is the home of Texas Tech University and also this area is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world. Lubbock is also known as the home of Buddy Holly and Prairie Dog Town.
We stopped in Lubbock to visit my my two nieces, Tami and Traci and their families. Bart, Tami’s husband, cooked for everyone on his Big Green Egg. We had bison burgers and peppers stuffed with cream cheese and shrimp, wrapped in bacon. The bison meat came from a buffalo that Bart took on a buffalo hunt. The kids spent the next two hours in the swimming pool.
I might mention both families are members of the Texas Tech family and the Auburn family. Ashleigh, Tami and Bart’s daughter, is a senior at Auburn. Tami and Bart’s other daughter, Lindsi, and Traci and Kurtis’s daughter, Brittley, will be entering Texas Tech in the fall. Karson is Traci and Kurtis’s son, and he is an excellent baseball player. I told him we need him at Auburn. Just keep an open mind.
Now it is time for the kids to give you their thoughts on todays road trip.
In Ethan’s words…
Today went by much slower than yesterday. When we woke up, we packed, ate breakfast, and left for Lubbock, Texas. Along the way we saw a lot of oil pumps, lots of windmills, and four dust devils. When we got to Lubbock, we unpacked and left to see our cousins in Slaton, Texas. On the way their house, I was able to count about 23 prairie dogs poking out of their holes on the side of the road. When we got there Riley, Samuel, and I got into their pool. It was 9ft deep, but when I swam to the bottom it seemed like it was 10-12ft. Halfway through our pool time we had fresh bison burgers. They were delicious, and I was finished with my second serving before most everyone else had finished their first. Throughout the pool time Rosco and Flash, their two dogs, were trying to save us from drowning although, we were doing fine. Once we had finished in the pool, we went to their barn to see the stuffed animals that Bart had hunted from all over the US. One of the animals was the bison we had just eaten, which he shot two years ago in Nebraska. After that we went back to the hotel for bed.
In Samuel’s words… We left for Lubbock, Texas and Ethan and I lost our electronics privileges so we read a book. We saw mesas, dust devils, and lots of wind turbines before we got to the hotel. We changed into our swimsuits and went to Tami’s house to eat and swim. Bart showed us all the animals he shot.
In Riley’s words…
Today we left our hotel room heading to Lubbock, Texas. When we got closer to Lubbock we stopped at a grocery store to get food for another picnic. We drove for about 30 more minutes and then we stopped to eat at a small picnic area. We left from there and headed to our hotel. In the car, we played a few games and time went by pretty fast when you are playing games. When we got to our hotel we unpacked our luggage. After we finished, we left to go to Tami and Bart’s house for dinner and to swim in their pool. When we got there Ethan, Samuel, and I all swam in the pool for about 2 hours. When we got out, we ate some bison burgers with chips and dip. Karson, Brittley, Ashleigh, Lindsi, and Traci were there too. After we finished eating we got back in the pool for another hour or 2. When we got out this time we went to Tami and Bart’s barn to see the animals that Bart shot. There were a bunch of them. There was a mountain goat, mountain lion, a moose, a few deer, and the bison we ate. On the couch, Bart had the back of the bison fur so we could feel it. Once we left, we saw a bunch of wild prairie dogs. We also saw them going to their house. When we got back to the hotel we all went to sleep so we wouldn’t be exhausted driving to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
